CALL FOR PAPERS
Fifth Workshop on Algeria
'Restructuring the Algerian Economy: Trends, Patterns and Implications'
30 June 2001
University of the West of England
Bristol Business School
This workshop seeks to examine the attempts undertaken by Algeria to restructure and transform its national economy from a tightly centralised system to a market oriented one through reforms including:
¨ End of state monopoly
¨ Devaluation of local currency
¨ Phasing out central control of prices and salaries
¨ Privatising state assets
Changing fiscal and customs systems
The workshop will also be discussing the social, political and cultural implications of reforms which, on the one hand, are adding to social tension with a significant number of job losses and declining living standards. On the other hand, the perception of the restructuring process as too slow and held back by excessive red tape, the resistance of trade unions and the reluctance of politicians will also be examined.
Papers on the following topic areas will be welcome:
¨ Privatisation
¨ Restructuring and diversifying the economy
¨ The role of SMEs
¨ The role of the banking sector
¨ Employment issues
¨ Agriculture and self sufficiency
¨ Government policies including fiscal and monetary policies
¨ Foreign direct investment
¨ Education and training
¨ Comparative models from other countries
¨ Social and cultural implications
This list is an indication only and other topics will be considered.
