Exiles and Outsiders

An International Conference

The King Fahd Advanced School of Translation
Tangier, Morocco
25 - 26 April 2002

The concept of the 'outsider' has been a central theme in European philosophy, politics and literature in the 20th century. The experience of exile has similarly played a powerful and fundamental role in determining what it is to be a 'European'. The aim of this conference is to place the twin metaphors of 'exile' and 'the outsider' alongside each other and to consider to what extent they reflect and are related to each other.

Tangier is the venue for this conference because this is a city which has always had to confront these issues as an integral part of shaping its own history and identity as an Arab city, a Muslim city and, for Europeans and Americans, a site of e in exile. To what extent, it will be asked, can such twin identities be reconciled in art, politics or philosophy?

More precisely, how can the metaphor of 'the other', so central to European philosophical language of the late 20th century, be sustained as a legitimate term for expressing either 'exile' or 'outsiderdom' in 21st century Europe where borders, frontiers, territory are constantly being redrawn? Is it therefore possible to challenge or move beyond post-colonialist theory to a point where 'the other' and related concepts must be dissolved or renegotiated?

Papers are invited on all aspects of these themes.

Deadline for submission of abstracts 15 December 2001.
