The poet, editor, and translator Armand Guibert (1906-1993) began his career as a professor at Sousse at the same time as Jean Amrouche. He was at the origins of many literary careers. From Patrice de la Tour du Pin to Pessoa and Léopold Sédar Senghor, his role as a passeur of XXth century poetry, although unknown, is an essential one. His proximity with Jean Amrouche was the greatest in his life; during 20 years, Guibert was his confidant, his editor, his critic, in short his Pygmalion. This creative friendship, rich and demanding, is analyzed in this paper through a voluminous correspondence of hundreds of letters, preserved in the Guibert archives of the Fonds Roblès-Patrimoine méditerranéen (BU Lettres, Montpellier III).

Both bibliographers and publishers classified L'Amant imaginaire by T. Amrouche as a fiction. However, the typographical structure of the book gives it the form of a diary. However, its characters and its plot remind us of some of the author's experiences. This generic "telescoping" prompts us to question the nature of this text in order to see if it is a real diary or a simulated one. Moreover, it raises the question of the link between the diary and the novel and to what extent one borrows the generic codes of the other. The answer to these questions revolves around three axes: the textual typography, the biographical scope and the part of fiction in L'Amant imaginaire.

Key-words: Taos Amrouche, diary, fictional diary, novel, simulated writing, paratext, peritext.

Alexandra Ormerod - Jean Amrouche and the Translation of Chants berbères de Kabylie: The Retrieval and Re-creation of Collective Memory

This article focuses on the translation of traditional oral Amazigh Kabyle song into French poetry by Jean Amrouche as published in Chants berbères de Kabylie in 1939. Through translation Amrouche sought to retrieve and re-create Kabyle collective memory and to ensure the survival of the cultural capital of an indigenous people. This article examines the many layers that constituted the retrieval process. Translation is seen as providing a line of continuity for a heritage of Kabyle collective narratives both within and beyond national borders, securing the oral texts in the fixity of the written word and providing a springboard for further translations and interpretations of Kabyle song. The process is viewed as a catalyst for creativity, part of a creative continuum in the evolution of Amazigh Kabyle culture and identity.

Key-words: Jean Amrouche, collective memory, translation, poetry, creativity, identity

Postcolonial studies show that colonization led colonized writers to become apparent in front of the colonial centre. Because of the political situation, French public thus gets a literary horizon of expectations: the work, to be in evidence, has to satisfy the demand of authenticity, so describe the traditional space in an anthropological way. Jacinthe noire, published under the French colonization (1947), belongs to this emergence process of North African Francophone literature. And yet Taos Amrouche chooses not to fill this horizon of expectations: the enunciation is relocated (Reine is in exile), and the autobiographical voice is delegated to a fictional narrator. The expectations are even sabotaged, insofar as French reader can read here a satire of his own society, through the microcosm of the Parisian boarding school. The work thus gets away from those anthropological expectations that are paternalistic and double-edged because they give priority to documentary value. But it also gets away from visibility: this original auto fiction didn't attract attention of French public, unlike more conformist texts as Le Fils du pauvre (Mouloud Feraoun, 1950).

Key-words: Horizon of expectations, anthropological scenography, description, autobiography, emergent literature, Taos Amrouche

The problem of testimony constituted for Jean El Mouhoub Amrouche one of the threads of its intellectual development: establishing a plurality of witnesses, Amrouche, using guile (tiherci in kabyle), knew, under the diverse masks of the commitment convened by the author of this article, testify of a Berber, Kabyle identity, which works furtively in all the writings of this French-Algerian intellectual. All these masks do not cancel each other out, but participate in the complexity of a character which, in colonial situation and during the war for independence, was not able to assume calmly his multiple belongings. His frustrated identity engendered a frustrated poetry.

Key-words: testimony, commitment, tiherci, linguistic alienation, precursor, animus, anima.

The perpetual displacement in the desert or the sea is one of the recurrent elements among Malika Mokeddem female protagonists in her novels, who are characterized by this interstice of the in-betweeness and which becomes a site for resistance, ambiguity and exile. If the cycle of the desert starts with her first novel The Walking Men and ends with La Nuit de la lézarde, with her sixth novel, N'zid, a new journey commences, this time in the aquatics spaces. In this essay, I will study how the mobile space of the boat and the sea transforms the protagonist identity and how the concept of being homeless in the world will gradually replace any belonging to an identity fixed and unique, thus refuting notions like home or homeland.

Key-words: Mokeddem, identity, Algeria, nomadic, in-betweeness

Maghrebi literature written in French conveys, in the richness of its voices, a deep tear between two cultures. Choosing French as a way to communicate means having your identity torn, something all writers, both men and women, show in their works: the colonizer's language, but also the language of the elites which allows opening up to the world. Also, the choice of France as a foster country stresses their position as people torn out between two languages and two cultures. This deep gap is first and foremost seen in the women's voices. All of them show common signals: they face not only their condition as Muslim women, but also the search for a "migrant" identity -in the origin of which we find the loss of their father's language-, which is conveyed through a common topic.

Key-words: Identity, borders, language, female writing, Algeria.
